How to Keep Flowers Fresh for Longer

It’s disappointing when a flower arrangement doesn’t stay fresh for more than a couple of days. Nobody likes to deal with a cleaning out a vase that becomes moldy or stinks after leaving your flowers in there for a week. There are several things you can do to keep your flower arrangement fresher for longer. It’s quite easy to do as well. Keep reading on to learn about what you can do to keep flowers looking better for longer.

First Thing’s First

● If you received your flower arrangement wrapped in plastic, then this should be removed as soon as possible.
● Your flowers should then be placed into a vase after the stems are cut at a 45-degree angle (this helps the stems suck up water more effectively).
● Do not throw out the packet of flower food that came with your arrangement! It’s one of the best things you can use to help your flowers last longer. Add a little bit to the water when you first receive or place the flowers in a vase. Save the rest to add to the water every time you change it.
● Avoid extreme temperatures and drafts that can dry out flowers and cause wilting.
● While it might seem like a good idea at first, your flowers should not be placed directly in full sunlight. Instead place flowers somewhere cool.
● Keep the arrangement away from fruit and cigarette smoke. The chemicals released can cause flowers to bloom prematurely as well as damage many types of flowers.

● Make sure you keep the vase nice and full of water,
● If you kept your flowers in a basket/container with foam, then the arrangement should be watered with fresh water every day.
● Any leaves and stems that are dying and wilting should be removed from the arrangement. Don’t allow leaves to float in the water either.
● Change the water either every other day or when the water gets cloudy. Clean the vase with soap and rinse very well to remove potential bacteria growth.
● Cut the bottom of the stems every time the water is changed. Make sure to keep a 45-degree angle.
● Remove any dead or dying flowers while changing the water
● If you run out of flower food or want to give your flowers more nutrients, add a teaspoon or two of sugar in the water.
● Add a couple drops of bleach to the water to inhibit bacteria growth and kill any existing garms, overall helping your flowers to last even longer.

As long as you follow these tips, you should be able to enjoy your flower arrangement for about a week or so. In some cases, even longer!
